The Happiness Factor

While at breakfast this morning, I overheard an interesting conversation between a father and a son.

The fathers asks, “What do you want to do with your life?”

The son relpies with enthusiasm, “I want to produce movies, and was considering film…”

His father cuts the son off in mid-sentence, “Have you considered looking into a four year University.”

The son, “No. I was thinking I would check out film school.” His enthusiasm beginning to wane. I could sense skepticism slipping into his mind.

The father countered with this, “Sure, sure… but you might want to just check out the University.”

His son proceeded to defend his reason for wanting to pursue the film industry, yet his father persisted.

“I’m just saying, Hollywood and films sounds wonderful, but having a four year degree would be a good back up plan in case it doesn’t work out.”

I could tell the son was crushed by his fathers resistant mind. The seed of doubt was planted. It would be interesting to follow this son over time and watch as that seed grows into a full blow tree of failure and blocks his real dreams, happiness, and purpose for life.

Think back to your own life. Did someone who loved you do this to you. Did they plant a seed of doubt and now you own a full grown tree of failure? Why did you allow this to happen? Why did I allow this to happen? Certainly, these people who loved us did not do the damage on purpose. The same message was probably planted inside of them and grew into a giant tree of failure as well. This cycle seems to be duplicated over and over.

It’s time to stop the cycle. It’s high time we decide to live how we were intended to live. We were intended to live by sharing our art. That one thing that is the everything about who we are as a person. If we can decide to dig deep and pull out the art inside of us we can live again. We can be purposeful, happy, and bring joy to others with our art.

Did you dream of being a writer, photographer, or film maker? How about architect, speaker, or run a charity to help others in need. What was your art that you gave up? What were you at natural at doing? This is your art. All you need to do is stop chasing other peoples dreams (work and employment) and start finding your own. This will unlock your happiness and unlocking your happiness in your way will unlock success that matters for you.

There seems to be a new movement coming about. As I read new books on motivation what I am finding is people who have trusted the corporation to take care of them and found the only one to be trusted is yourself. A move away from the 1980′s concept of “He who dies with the most money wins” was a deceptive lie. We were deceived. We wasted time chasing things that didn’t matter or things that we could never really reach. If we had only chased the one thing that mattered… our art… we could have live a better life. This seems to be the new message and I am seeing it in books likeĀ Seth Godin’s Linchpin and Hugh MacLeod’s Ignore Everybody.

The message coming around the corner today is do what you love. Do what you love with all your heart and drive and you will be successful. You will be filled with love, peace, and become a driving force in others lives as you share your art with our world.
